On Sunday at Fenway Park against the Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield made the most of his last start before moving to the bullpen next week when Daisuke Matsuzaka (back, neck injury) returns from the disabled list.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, their bullpen failed Wakefield and let one get away.

The Orioles avoided a three game sweep to earn their third win of the season as rookie Rhyne Hughes had an RBI single and Matt Wieters added a game-winning two-run single in the 10th inning to lead Baltimore to a 7-6 win over Boston.

A Red Sox rally in the bottom of the 10th fell short. Behind 7-4 and with one out, J.D. Drew had an RBI double and Bill Hall’s RBI single made it 7-6. But Darnell Hall popped up and Marco Scutaro lined out to second to end the game.

Orioles closer Jim Johnson (1-1) got the win, Cla Meredith (1) got the save and Red Sox reliever Scott Atchison (0-1) got the loss.

Wakefield ended up going 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and seven hits and striking out 5. Orioles’ starter David Hernandez, who has pitched well this season but with no wins to show for it, went five innings, allowing three runs and four hits and striking out one.

In the second inning, Orioles first baseman Hughes doubled to center and on a full count Craig Tatum singled to left to score Hughes for a 1-0 lead. It would be the only real mistake for Wakefield in the game.

The Red Sox took advantage of the struggling Orioles’ bullpen to score four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz had RBI singles, J.D. Drew’s sacrifice fly scored Youkilis from third and pinch-hitting Mike Lowell doubled to score Ortiz for a 4-1 lead.

Baltimore came back to tie the game at 4 in the top of the seventh inning.

With one out Nolan Reimold doubled to center field and Adam Jones grounded out to third, sending Reimold to third. Okajima came in to relieve Wakefield and promptly gave up a double to Nick Markakis to score Reimold to make it 4-2. Miguel Tejada followed with a two-run homer, his 22nd career homer against the Red Sox, to tie the game at 4. Luke Scott grounded out to first to end the inning.

The Red Sox fall to 8-11, 5-8 at home. The Orioles improve to 3-16, 3-10 on the road.
