Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez homered in support of Gavin Floyd as the Chicago White Sox easily took care of the Los Angeles Angels, 9-2, in the opener of a four-game series on Monday.
Paul Konerko added an RBI and scored a run and rookie Dayan Viciedo hit his first career home run for the White Sox, who stayed within one game of first place in the American League Central.
Ramirez’s eighth blast of the season gave Chicago a quick 1-0 lead in the first against left-hander Scott Kazmir, who is having the worst season of his career. Brent Lillibridge got to Kazmir again in the second with an RBI single to push the edge to 2-1.
The Angels got a run back on an RBI groundout in the sixth but the White Sox answered right away in the bottom of that frame with three more runs, capped by Quentin’s 14th blast of the season - a two-run shot. Kazmir (7-8) stuck around long enough to yield Viciedo’s homer and two more walks in the seventh before being removed.
Floyd (4-7) had no such trouble, allowing just five hits and one run while walking two and striking out four in seven innings to earn his second straight win. The right-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in each of his last six starts.
