Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a tiebreaking two-run double and Brett Anderson pitched seven solid innings to lead the Oakland Athletics to a 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday afternoon.
Kouzmanoff’s double to center capped a four-run sixth inning in which Oakland erased a 2-0 deficit. The Athletics’ first two runs of the inning scored on a throwing error by Kansas City pitcher Sean O’Sullivan and a fielding error by Royals third baseman Mike Aviles.
Anderson (3-2) gave up two runs and three hits in his second start since coming off the disabled list. He struck out four and walked one.
Michael Wuertz struck out the side in the ninth for his fourth save.
Yuniesky Betancourt homered in the eighth for Kansas City to make it a one-run game.
O’Sullivan (1-2) pitched three-hit ball over the first five innings. He gave up four runs – three earned – and six hits over 5 1/3 innings.
The Royals scored twice in the first inning on Billy Butler’s sacrifice fly and Jose Guillen’s fielder’s choice.
