Robinson Cano's two-run single snapped an eighth-inning tie as the New York Yankees rallied to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3 Sunday afternoon.
Cano's go-ahead hit capped a four-run eighth for the Yankees, who avoided a sweep at the hands of the division-rival Jays. Derek Jeter added an RBI single in the comeback, while Brett Gardner came around to score on a Jason Frasor wild pitch.
Scott Downs (1-5) earned the loss, allowing two runs on one hit without recording an out. The Toronto bullpen wasted an outstanding performance from Brandon Morrow, who limited the Yankees to a run on four hits in seven innings and added eight strikeouts.
Javier Vazquez (5-5) was equally sharp for New York, allowing two runs in seven innings with nine Ks. The only hit he allowed came on a Vernon Wells two-run homer in the sixth inning that temporarily gave the Jays the lead.
Mariano Rivera pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure his 13th save.
Toronto finished 6-3 on its nine-game home stand against Baltimore, Tampa Bay and New York, but held late-inning leads in all nine games.
The Jays now embark on a nine-game road trip beginning Tuesday against the AL-leading Rays. The Yankees also have Monday off, then they head to Baltimore for a three-game set.
