Yankees 5, Orioles 4: Raul Ibanez's ground-rule double in the 12th was enough for New York to notch its second victory in a row over Baltimore.
Robinson Cano led off the 12th with a line drive off the glove of third baseman Mark Reynolds. The ball trickled into left field, and Cano scampered to second for a double. Alex Rodriguez advanced Cano to third with a groundout, and then the Orioles intentionally walked Curtis Granderson to get to Ibanez.
Pedro Strop (0-1) hung a breaking ball to the veteran outfielder, who ripped it over the head of right fielder Nick Markakis for the winning hit.
Mariano Rivera closed the game out for his first save of the year and 604th of his career. Reliever Clay Rapada (1-0) got two outs in the 11th to record the victory.
New York scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 4, but then both teams went scoreless for almost six innings. The Yankees finished 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position, while the Orioles were 0-for-8.
The Orioles led 4-1 early after scoring three times — twice on wild pitches by
Yankees starter Freddy Garcia, and another on a Russell Martin error.
Thirteen pitchers saw action in the game, which lasted for more than 4 1/2 hours.
GAME NOTEBOOK:
Garcia threw five wild pitches, which only six other pitchers had ever done in history … Garcia hadn’t thrown more than five wild pitches in a season
since 2005, when he led the American League with 20 … Derek Jeter, who went 4-for-4 in Monday night’s victory over the Orioles, led
off the game with a deep home run to center field.
