Angels 5, Red Sox 3: Ervin Santana pitched 6 1/3 strong innings for his second straight quality start and Mark Trumbo hit his 30th home run as visiting Los Angeles snapped a four-game slide.

Albert Pujols, Erick Aybar and Chris Iannetta each singled in a run and Mike Trout recorded a pair of hits in his first career game at Fenway Park for the Angels.

Jarrod Saltamacchia hit a two-run homer for Boston, which has dropped five of seven to fall five games under .500 at 59-64 - its lowest point since May 12.

Santana (7-10) had not put up back-to-back quality starts since June 16 and June 23 but followed up a seven-inning, one-run performance against Cleveland last week by holding the Red Sox to two runs on five hits. The right-hander walked a pair and struck out four.

The Los Angeles offense got to Aaron Cook (3-7) in the third inning, when Trout singled, moved up on Cook’s throwing error and scored on Pujols’ single to center. The Angels added two more in the fourth, with five consecutive singles finding their way through.

Trumbo made it a 5-0 gap in the fifth, following a single from Kendrys Morales by sending a deep drive into the last row of seats on top of the “Green Monster” in left field.

Boston tried to claw its way back into the game, cutting it to 5-2 on Saltalamacchia’s 21st blast in the sixth and drawing within two when Scott Podsednik scored on a wild pitch in the seventh. But Scott Downs came on and got Jacoby Ellsbury to fly out to deep center as the tying run in the seventh and the Red Sox left two runners on in the eighth inning as well.

Ernesto Frieri worked a perfect ninth for his 15th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Boston held a pregame ceremony honoring the late Johnny Pesky and every member of the team wore Pesky’s No. 6 in tribute. … The Red Sox activated OF Daniel Nava and RHP Vicente Padilla from the disabled list before the game. Nava went 1-for-4 and Padilla pitched a scoreless inning in their respective returns. Carl Crawford (elbow) was placed on the DL and Danny Valencia was optioned back to Triple-A in corresponding moves. … The Angels have gotten the win in each of Santana’s last five starts after going 5-14 in his first 19 turns. … Trout had a streak of 30 successful stolen bases attempts snapped when he was gunned down at second base by Saltalamacchia in the ninth.
