Yankees 6, Tigers 2: Alex Rodriguez drove in a pair of runs to move past Hall of Famer Willie Mays on the all-time RBI list and CC Sabathia tossed eight solid innings as host New York won two of three from Detroit.
Curtis Granderson homered for the second straight game and drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning for his 500th career RBI. Veteran Andruw Jones replaced an injured Nick Swisher and belted a solo shot in the eighth inning.
After Rodriguez had an infield single in the second inning, he added a run-scoring fielder's choice in the seventh for his 1,904th RBI. Rodriguez now sits in eighth place on the all-time list.
Prince Fielder homered for the first time in 72 at-bats and Miguel Cabrera added an RBI double for the Tigers, who have dropped seven of their last nine games.
Sabathia (3-0) yielded two runs on four hits and struck out eight. He was relieved by David Robertson, who retired the side in the ninth inning.
With New York nursing a 2-1 lead, Granderson launched an offering from Max Scherzer (1-3) deep to right field in the fourth inning. Center fielder Austin Jackson raced over and attempted to make the play, but he was unable to hold onto the ball as his arm wrapped around the railing.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Granderson's homer was his eighth of the season ... Swisher tweaked his left hamstring during a third-inning at-bats. After drawing a walk, he was replaced by Jones ... The Yankees host a three-game series against AL East rival Baltimore beginning on Monday ... The Tigers open a three-game set against AL Central adversary Kansas City.
