Yankees 7, Indians 1:
Dewayne Wise homered, tripled and drove in three in a spot start and Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven-plus solid frames as host New York took the opener from Cleveland.

Robinson Cano hit his 17th home run and Nick Swisher slugged his 12th for the Yankees, who have won three straight and 13 of 16.

Wise was given a rare start in center field with Curtis Granderson resting his legs in the designated hitter spot. With the Yankees already holding a 2-0 lead in the second inning, Wise got a hanging curveball on a 1-2 count from Josh Tomlin (3-5) and deposited it deep into the right-field seats to double the lead.

Kuroda (7-7) was charged with one run on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. The right-hander has allowed two earned runs or less in five of his last six starts.

Cano gave New York the lead with a two-run double off Tomlin in the first inning and joined Swisher for back-to-back solo homers in the third to push the lead to 6-0.

Tomlin was charged with all six runs in three innings — his shortest career start.

Wise added his RBI triple in the triple in the sixth to push it to 7-0.

The Indians, who have dropped three straight, avoided the shutout with Jason Kipnis’ sacrifice fly in the eight.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Wise has served mostly as a defensive replacement this season, recording only 30 at-bats in 36 previous games. He entered Monday with a .133 batting average and one extra-base hit (a double) … New York C Russell Martin (back) and 3B Alex Rodriguez (rest) each got the day off. Both are expected to play Tuesday … Indians LH Scott Barnes was recalled before the game and pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, allowing one run … Swisher made a trio of strong defensive plays in the eighth inning, recording all three outs in the frame.
