Yankees 5, Mariners 2:
Jayson Nix's pinch-hit three-run double highlighted a four-run eighth inning, lifting visiting New York to a series victory over Seattle.

Derek Jeter added a solo home run for the Yankees, who took two out of three from the Mariners and closed out their seven-game road trip with a 2-5 mark.

Trailing by a run in the eighth, New York got the rally started when Jeter was hit by a pitch. Left-hander Lucas Luetge (1-1) came on and surrendered back-to-back singles before getting Curtis Granderson to foul out to third. Nix pinch hit for Raul Ibanez and greeted right-hander Shawn Kelley by driving a slider to the gap in left-center and clearing the bases.

The Yankees added another run on Russell Martin’s single and made a winner out of reliever David Phelps (2-3). Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his 26th save.

Hisashi Iwakuma lasted five innings and was charged with one run on six hits while walking three and striking out three for the Mariners. The Japanese right-hander allowed a solo home run to Jeter in the first but worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth.

The Mariners claimed the lead in the bottom of the first as New York starter Ivan Nova struggled to settle in. The right-hander allowed his only two hits with one out in the frame and then walked two straight to force in the first run. Mike Carp came up next and grounded into a fielder’s choice to plate Jesus Montero with the go-ahead run.

Nova ended up walking six in five-plus innings while striking out five.

Jeter, batting in the No. 2 hole for the first time this season with Ichiro Suzuki leading off, looked plenty comfortable in a 3-for-4 effort. Ichiro went 1-for-5.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Eric Chavez played third base for the Yankees and will get the bulk of the playing time at the hot corner with Alex Rodriguez on the DL. Rodriguez broke a bone in his hand when he was hit by a pitch Tuesday and will miss 6-to-8 weeks. INF Ramiro Pena was recalled to take the empty roster spot. … Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez (concussion) has been cleared to resume physical activity. … Ichiro made his debut in the leadoff spot for New York after batting eighth the first two games of the series. He finished the series 3-for-12 against his former team.
