Rays 4, Mariners 3: Ben Zobrist doubled home Carlos Pena with one out in the bottom of the 14th to lift host Tampa Bay over Seattle in a four-hour, 46-minute marathon.

Pena singled to right off Tom Wilhelmsen (3-2) with one out in the 14th and Zobrist smacked a grounder down the first-base line that Seattle’s Justin Smoak was unable to backhand. The ball went into the right-field corner and Ichiro Suzuki’s throw was wide right of the plate, allowing Pena to slide in safely just prior to a diving lunge by catcher Jesus Montero.

Six Tampa Bay relievers combined for 6 1/3 innings of one-hit relief with Jake McGee (3-2) getting two outs in the top of the 14th as the Rays defeated Seattle for the ninth straight time. Tampa Bay has won 12 of its last 13 home games against the Mariners.

The teams combined to strike out 32 times – 17 by Seattle.

Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma blanked Tampa Bay on three hits over the first five innings before tiring in the sixth during his third start of the season.

B.J. Upton began the inning with a homer to left to tie the score at 1. Zobrist, who had three hits, doubled with one out and scored when Jeff Keppinger’s two-out single caromed off the glove of Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager and into left field.

Carlos Peguero hit a mammoth blast well up the right-center field bleachers off James Shields in the seventh to turn Seattle’s one-run deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Tampa Bay tied the score in the bottom of the seventh on Upton’s two-out infield single.

Shields struck out 10 in 7 2/3 innings. He allowed three runs, four hits and two walks.

Iwakuma allowed two runs and six hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked one.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Peguero has hit three of his seven career homers against Shields. … Upton has six RBIs over the last three games after having just five in his first 13 games in July. … Smoak struck out three times for the second time in three games. … Shields has struck out 10 or more batters three times this season … Tampa Bay’s Hideki Matsui batted for DH Luke Scott (back soreness) in the 10th inning.
