Nationals 6, Giants 4: Jayson Werth drove in three runs and Stephen Strasburg tossed six solid innings as Washington topped San Francisco on a day that saw Major League Baseball suspend Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera 50 games after he tested positive for testosterone.
Cabrera, who sat out Wednesday, will miss the final 44 contests of the regular season. The suspension will extend to the postseason - should the Giants qualify - or carry over to the 2013 campaign. The All-Star Game MVP acknowledged in a statement that he used the substance and was "deeply sorry for my mistake."
Werth sandwiched a two-run base hit in the first inning and an RBI single in the fifth around Danny Espinosa's two-run homer in the third. Werth also came around to score on Kurt Suzuki's sacrifice fly to give Washington a 6-2 lead in the seventh inning.
Steve Lombardozzi collected four hits to improve to 15-for-30 over his last seven games.
Strasburg (14-5) won his third consecutive start after scattering four hits and striking out seven. The hard-throwing right-hander is now up to 139 1/3 innings this season.
Brandon Crawford extended his hitting streak to a career-high eight games with a two-run single in the second inning. Gregor Blanco added an RBI single in the eighth for the Giants, who lost to the Nationals for the fifth time in six contests.
Tim Lincecum (6-13) fell to 0-4 in his last five games against the Nationals. Lincecum, who permitted four runs on eight hits in four innings on Wednesday, surrendered a career-high eight runs versus Washington on July 3.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Washington will enjoy Thursday off before facing all four of its National League East rivals in succession. The Nationals will host New York for a three-game set before facing visiting Atlanta for a three-game series, beginning on Monday. Road tilts versus Philadelphia and Miami are set to follow. ... San Francisco will visit San Diego for a three-game set, beginning on Friday.
