Giants 6, Pirates 5:
Melky Cabrera’s home run highlighted a five-run fourth inning and visiting San Francisco held off red-hot Pittsburgh.

Trailing by three runs early, the Giants took the lead with five in the fourth inning against Erik Bedard (4-10). Ryan Theriot doubled in a run and scored on a two-run homer by Cabrera. Hector Sanchez followed with an RBI single, and Pablo Sandoval came in from second base on the second Pittsburgh error of the inning.

The Pirates, who had won eight of nine, twice got back within a run when Casey McGehee and Pedro Alvarez hit solo home runs in the fifth and eighth innings, respectively. San Francisco's Sergio Romo ended any hopes of a comeback by retiring the side in order in the ninth.

Winning pitcher Barry Zito (7-6) gave up four runs on seven hits and three walks in five innings for the Giants. He struck out three.

Andrew McCutchen drove in a pair of runs for Pittsburgh, one on a base hit in the first inning and the other on a third-inning triple. Neil Walker’s RBI double in the third gave the Pirates a 3-0 lead.

Bedard allowed five runs - four earned - in 3 2/3 innings, yielding four hits and walking three.

GAME NOTEBOOK: McCutchen is 24-for-45 (.533) with four doubles, four home runs, 12 runs scored and 16 RBIs over his last 12 home games. ... Bedard, who has a 6.52 ERA over his last 10 starts, is the first National League pitcher to record his 10th loss this year. ... Despite the defeat, the Pirates still own the best home record in baseball at 27-14.
