Cardinals 5, Diamondbacks 2: David Freese snapped an 0-for-20 slump with a go-ahead two-run homer and Rafael Furcal added a two-run triple as host St. Louis beat Arizona for the seventh straight time.
Freese, who had not homered since July 31, followed Carlos Beltran’s one-out double in the fourth inning with a shot into the left-center field seats off Joe Saunders (6-9). Freese’s 16th homer gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead as they won for the 15th time in 18 home games.
Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt blasted a solo shot an estimated 456 feet, breaking Busch Stadium's six-year-old record for the longest homer by an opposing player.
Adam Wainwright (11-10) allowed two runs on five hits while striking out five in six innings to win his fifth straight home start. He has struck out 40 batters over his last 42 1/3 innings. Jason Motte pitched a perfect ninth for his 27th save in 31 chances.
The victory moved the Cards into a tie for the second wild-card spot in the National League.
St. Louis' Allen Craig hit a fifth-inning solo homer, his 18th, giving him 10 RBIs in his past 13 games at first base.
Furcal, batting eighth for the second straight game, doubled and tripled in four at-bats. His two-run triple in the sixth gave the Cardinals breathing room after Arizona cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top half.
GAME NOTEBOOK: St. Louis OF Matt Holliday still holds the record for the longest Busch Stadium homer, a 469-foot shot on July 20. … Cardinals LHP Jaime Garcia will rejoin the rotation Sunday after missing more than two months with a shoulder injury. Rookie Joe Kelly will move to the bullpen, and the team likely will send a reliever to the minors. … Wainwright improved to 5-2 lifetime against Arizona. …The Diamondbacks have dropped eight of 11 to fall under .500.
