Mets 9, Diamondbacks 5: Andrew Brown belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer and Jonathon Niese labored through six innings in his return from the disabled list as visiting New York seized the rubber match of the three-game series.
With the Mets nursing a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning, Brown jumped on a 3-2 fastball from Will Harris and deposited it over the left-field wall for his fourth homer - and second as a pinch hitter. Wilmer Flores provided insurance by going deep for the first time in his career as New York posted its fifth win in six outings.
Aaron Hill homered for the second straight contest and drove in four runs. A.J. Pollock collected three hits and scored twice for the Diamondbacks, who fell 7 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and 5 1/2 behind Cincinnati for the second wild card.
Sidelined since June 21 with a partially torn left rotator cuff injury, Niese (4-6) enjoyed a quick 4-0 lead before even throwing a pitch. With the bases loaded, Mike Baxter's bouncer caromed off the glove of first baseman Paul Goldschmidt into right field, plating three runs. Anthony Recker followed with an RBI double off Zeke Spruill (0-2).
Niese overcame Hill's RBI double and three-run homer as well his own error in the sixth inning to escape with a 5-4 lead. The left-hander yielded four runs on seven hits.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Arizona OF Cody Ross dislocated his right hip as he stumbled across first base while running out a grounder. He was carted off the field and replaced by Matt Davidson, who was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Sunday. Davidson recorded his first major-league hit to lead off the sixth inning.. ... Spruill permitted five runs (one earned) on six hits in three innings to take the loss. ... New York continues its 11-game road trip on Monday by beginning a three-game series with the Dodgers. Arizona wraps up its eight-game homestand with a three-game set versus Baltimore, which begins on Monday.
