Braves 5, Pirates 4 (10): Andrelton Simmons lined a walk-off double to right-center in the bottom of the 10th as host Atlanta won for the 14th time in its past 18 games.

Simmons finished 3-for-5, ripping a pitch from Mark Melancon (1-1) into the gap to easily score Dan Uggla from second base. Anthony Varvaro (3-0) pitched a scoreless 10th for the victory as the Braves remained seven games ahead of Washington in the National League East.

The Braves tied the game at 4 on B.J. Upton’s sixth-inning two-run homer, and nearly won it in the ninth on Freddie Freeman’s drive with one on and one out that Pittsburgh center fielder Andrew McCutchen caught at the top of the fence.

McCutchen finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Pittsburgh, which lost for the fourth time in its past five contests. Pittsburgh starter Jeff Locke allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts, seeing his consecutive scoreless innings streak end at 21 1/3 on Freeman’s two-run double in the third.

Atlanta starter Mike Minor allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits in six innings, walking nobody and striking out six. Uggla finished with two hits, two walks and two runs scored and Jason Heyward added two hits.

GAME NOTEBOOK: The Braves left the bases loaded in the eighth and stranded runners at first and second in the ninth. … Pittsburgh’s Russell Martin made his first career start in right field in his 970th career game. … Atlanta improved to 6-2 in extra-inning games; the Pirates dropped to 4-2 in extras.
