Braves 4, Mets 3: Jason Heyward snapped a 0-for-22 skid with three hits – including a homer – and Ervin Santana dominated in his Atlanta debut as the host Braves held on against New York.
Heyward finished with two runs and two RBIs for an Atlanta offense that had scored one run or less in four of its first seven games. Santana (1-0), signed to a one-year deal late in spring training, allowed three hits with no walks while striking out six in eight stellar innings, throwing 65 of his 88 pitches for strikes.
New York starter Zack Wheeler (0-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits in five innings, striking out six. David Wright tallied two hits and the Mets rallied against the Atlanta bullpen for three runs in the ninth.
Heyward led off the bottom of the first inning by launching his second homer of the season to right-center, culminating an 11-pitch at-bat against Wheeler. The Braves tacked on three runs in the fifth as Heyward’s single to right plated Evan Gattis and Freddie Freeman’s single to left scored Santana and Heyward.
Santana allowed Daniel Murphy’s double with two outs in the sixth, but Heyward’s sliding catch robbed Wright of a run-scoring hit and ended the threat. Jordan Walden allowed a hit and a walk in the ninth and after Juan Lagares drove in two runs on a single and Travis d'Arnaud's single off Craig Kimbrel brought the Mets within 4-3, Kimbrel struck out Ruben Tejada to end the game and earn his fourth save.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez shook up his struggling lineup, benching CF B.J. Upton for Jordan Schafer and moving SS Andrelton Simmons to the second spot in the lineup. … New York leadoff hitter Eric Young went 0-for-3 and is hitting .154. … Santana, who started the game with 20 consecutive strikes, collected his fifth career hit and scored his second career run in the fifth.
