White Sox 2, Tigers 0: Chris Bassitt took a shutout into the eighth and Tyler Flowers hit a two-run homer as visiting Chicago claimed the opener of a three-game series with American League Central leader Detroit.

Bassitt (1-1) held the Tigers to six hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings while earning his first major-league win in his fourth career start. He outdueled fellow rookie Kyle Lobstein (1-1), who settled in after a rough second inning - allowing two runs and five hits over seven innings.

Jake Petricka retired the final four hitters for his 14th save as the White Sox took a 9-8 lead in the season series. Victor Martinez went 2-for-2 to raise his average to .336 for the Tigers, who are one game ahead of Kansas City in the division.

The White Sox put together a two-out rally in the second, as Carlos Sanchez hit a ground-rule double before Flowers cranked a first-pitch changeup from Lobstein into the bullpen in left-center. Moises Sierra followed with a double, but Lobstein retired the next five hitters and 10 of the next 11 to keep the Tigers in it.

Detroit had baserunners in six of the first eight innings but couldn't cash in, going 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranding eight. Bassitt got plenty of help from his defense, including right fielder Avisail Garcia's sliding catch near the warning track to rob Miguel Cabrera and potentially save a run in the third and Sanchez's charging, bare-handed play on Andrew Romine's soft grounder to second to end the fourth.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Tigers C Alex Avila went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his return to the lineup after missing six games because of concussion-like symptoms. … Cabrera smacked his 50th double, matching his career-high set in 2006 with Miami. … White Sox CF Adam Eaton was not with the team Monday because of a death in his family but is expected to return Tuesday.
