Right-hander German Marquez took a no-hitter into the eighth inning en route to his first career shutout Sunday afternoon, allowing the Colorado Rockies to salvage one win in their four-game series against the San Francisco Giants with a 4-0 victory.

Nolan Arenado smacked his first home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fifth inning, giving Marquez (2-1) all the offense he would need as he threw his first career complete game.

The 24-year-old retired the first 15 Giants in order before hitting Kevin Pillar with his second pitch of the sixth inning.

Up 4-0 at the time, Marquez rebounded to retire the next seven Giants in succession before Evan Longoria denied him a piece of history with a clean single to left field with one out in the eighth inning.

Again, Marquez shook off the baserunner and got out of the eighth without giving up a run, then worked his seventh 1-2-3 inning of the game to end it.

Marquez did not walk a batter and struck out nine. He threw 105 pitches in snapping the Rockies' eight-game losing streak.

The four-year veteran had three times previously had a hand in combined shutouts -- including in his second start of this season, when he worked the first seven innings of a 1-0 Rockies win at Tampa Bay.

Marquez also three times previously had pitched eight innings.

After being held to a total of four runs in the first 38 innings of the series, the Rockies took a lead they would not relinquish in the third inning when Trevor Story followed a two-out walk issued to Arenado with an RBI double to center field.

Arenado's homer came with one out in the fifth, after Giants starter Derek Holland (1-2) had served up consecutive singles to Charlie Blackmon and Garrett Hampson.

Arenado led the National League with 38 home runs last season.

The Rockies totaled just five hits, four of which came off Holland in his six innings. The left-hander was charged with all four Colorado runs. He walked four and struck out six.

The shutout loss was the Giants' third of the season.

They completed a 10-game homestand with a 5-5 record after losing three of the first four games.
