Daulton Varsho led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a long homer to right to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-2 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night at Phoenix.
Varsho hammered the full-count pitch from Padres reliever Craig Stammen (5-3) an estimated 413 feet into the bleachers as Arizona defeated the Padres for the second straight night to open a four-game set. The blast was Varsho's sixth of the season.
Tyler Clippard (1-0) retired San Diego in order in the top of the ninth.
Wil Myers went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Padres.
Diamondbacks left-hander Madison Bumgarner allowed two runs and nine hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six and walked none.
Varsho was 2-for-3 with a walk and delivered an RBI single earlier in the contest. Ketel Marte hit his fifth homer for Arizona.
Padres left-hander Blake Snell gave up two runs and six hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two.
Snell hadn't allowed a run to the Diamondbacks in three previous career starts covering 17 2/3 innings.
Bumgarner pitched five-hit shutout ball over the first six innings, but trouble began brewing in the seventh when Eric Hosmer punched a leadoff single the other way into left field.
Myers came up and jumped all over Bumgarner's first-pitch curveball and drove it 394 feet over the fence in left center to tie the score. It represented Myers' 13th homer of the season and his sixth career blast off Bumgarner.
Tommy Pham and Adam Frazier hit back-to-back two-out singles later in the frame to end Bumgarner's night. The 32-year-old veteran expressed his displeasure over being pulled in the dugout to manager Torey Lovullo and pitching coach Matt Herges.
But right-hander Taylor Clarke fanned Manny Machado to extinguish the threat.
Arizona struck first in the second inning as Carson Kelly hit a leadoff single to center, moved to second on a two-out walk to Josh Rojas and scored on Varsho's single to left center.
The Diamondbacks increased the lead to 2-0 in the fifth when Marte came up with one out and lined a 1-1 curveball over the wall in left. The blast traveled 431 feet.
