Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered four hits, including a pair of solo home runs, in his return from a 13-game absence because of a left shoulder injury, leading the San Diego Padres to an 8-2 win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon in Phoenix.
Tatis also doubled, singled, drove in four runs and scored three while playing right field. Tatis played shortstop in 223 of his previous 226 MLB starts, and was the designated hitter in the other three.
Jake Cronenworth launched a two-run homer and Eric Hosmer contributed two hits for the Padres, who avoided getting swept in the four-game series.
San Diego had 11 hits one day after being no-hit by Diamondbacks rookie left-hander Tyler Gilbert.
Padres starter Craig Stammen threw two shutout innings before Reiss Knehr (1-0), Pierce Johnson, Tim Hill, Daniel Hudson, Emilio Pagan and Austin Adams combined to limit Arizona to two runs and six hits over the final seven innings.
Arizona right-hander Zac Gallen (1-7) allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings. He struck out five and walked three.
Josh Rojas went 3 for 4 with a homer for the Diamondbacks, finishing 10 for 15 for the series.
Tatis led off the game with a double and moved to third on a groundout. He was stranded after Cronenworth struck out and Tommy Pham flied out to right.
Tatis led off the third and pulled a slider over the fence in left for a 1-0 lead.
The Diamondbacks tied the score 1-1 in their half of the third.
Rojas singled with one out and Ketel Marte followed with a run-scoring triple to right field.
Tatis led off the fifth with another solo shot to move the Padres ahead 2-1.
Adam Frazier, who leads the majors with 143 hits, followed with a single to center and Cronenworth hit his two-run blast for a 4-1 lead.
Rojas homered to lead off the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-2.
Tatis came up with the bases loaded in the eighth and delivered a two-run single to stretch the lead to 6-2. The Padres added two more runs in the inning on a bases-loaded walk and wild pitch to make it 8-2.
