Erick Fedde struck out 10 over seven strong innings, Masyn Winn tripled, doubled and scored twice and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 5-2 in Denver on Wednesday night.

Fedde (9-9), acquired from the Chicago White Sox before the trade deadline, had his best outing for St. Louis (81-77). He allowed one run on six hits and a walk and finished one strikeout shy of his season high.

Pedro Pages, Ivan Herrera and Thomas Saggese also had two hits apiece for the Cardinals. Ryan Helsley got the final two outs with one pitch for his major-league-leading 48th save.

Brenton Doyle homered and Aaron Schunk, Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Jones had two hits each for Colorado (60-98).

St. Louis slowly built a lead with single runs in five straight innings. Saggese made it 1-0 with an RBI double in the second inning and Winn had a one-out triple and scored on Brendan Donovan's sacrifice fly in the third.

Colorado got one back in the bottom of the third but squandered a chance for more. Jacob Stallings led off with a single, Jones followed with a double to put runners on second and third and Schunk singled to left to bring home Stallings.

But Schunk was thrown out at second on a steal attempt and Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt caught Blackmon's liner and doubled up Jones at third to end the inning.

The Cardinals answered in the fourth when Pages singled to shortstop to drive in Jordan Walker, and Winn doubled in the fifth and scored on Goldschmidt's sacrifice fly to right.

That was all for Rockies starter Austin Gomber (5-12), who allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings.

St. Louis tacked on another run in the sixth when Pages drove in Herrera with a two-out single. That was more than enough for Fedde, who needed just 87 pitches to get through his seven innings.

Doyle led off the bottom of the ninth with his 23rd home run of the season.
