Jamie Vanderbeken scored 23 points and Diante Garrett added 19, leading Iowa State to a 78-64 win over Northern Arizona in the season opener for both teams on Friday night.
Iowa State led 35-21 at halftime as Vanderbeken and Garrett accounted for all the Cyclones' points. VanderBaken had 20 points while Garrett scored 15.
The win came in debut of Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg, a standout guard for the Cyclones in the 1990s.
Northern Arizona was led by Cameron Jones, who scored 15 points. Eric Platt added 12 points while Shane Johannson had 10.
Vanderbeken made 8-of-16 shots from the field, including 6-of-11 on 3-pointers. Garrett was 8-of-15 from the field and made 3-of-6 on 3-pointers.
The Cyclones made 11-of-22 shots from 3-point range. Jake Anderson scored 15 points while Melvin Ejim added 10.
