Matt Howard made a tip-in at the buzzer, and Butler beat Old Dominion 60-58 Thursday in the second round of the NCAA tournament at the Verizon Center in Washington.
After Old Dominion's Kent Bazemore tied the score on two free throws with 31 seconds left, Butler (24-9) held for the last shot. Shawn Vanzant missed a running attempt near the right baseline, and teammate Andrew Smith batted the rebound toward Howard, who banked it in from the left side.
Howard, playing much of the second half with four fouls, finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Shelvin Mack had 15 points and seven assists.
Eighth-seeded Butler, last year's NCAA runner-up, plays Saturday against Pittsburgh in the third round of the Southeast Region. The Bulldogs have won 10 games in a row, including the Horizon League tournament championship.
Frank Hassell had 20 points and six rebounds for ninth-seeded Old Dominion (27-7), champion of the Colonial Athletic Conference.
