NEW YORK CITY -- Garrett Stutz scored a career-high 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Wichita State into the NIT championship game with a 75-44 win over Washington State on Tuesday.
Toure’ Murry scored 13 points and Gabe Blair had 10 points and nine rebounds for the Shockers (28-8), who led 36-19 at halftime and outrebounded Washington State 51-21. Stutz, who averages 6.7 points, shot 10 of 13 from the field.
Wichita State will face the winner of the Alabama-Colorado semifinal in Thursday’s title game.
Washington State guard Klay Thompson, the nation’s ninth-leading scorer with 22.2 points per game, picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and finished with a season-low six points after shooting 1 of 10 from the field.
With Thompson a non-factor, Washington State (22-13) fell behind by 30 with nine minutes left in the second half. DeAngelo Casto and Reggie Moore scored nine points apiece for the Cougars, who averaged 73.7 points this season.
Wichita State, which beat Nebraska, Virginia Tech and College of Charleston in the first three rounds, held Washington State to 15-of-52 (28.8 percent) shooting and set a school record with its 28th win.
