Eli Carter registered 19 points and fellow freshman Myles Mack added 14 as host Rutgers earned its second victory over a top 10 team in 10 days by defeating No. 8 Connecticut 67-60 on Saturday.
Mike Poole had five of his nine points during a decisive 10-0 run in the second half as Rutgers (9-7, 1-2 Big East) took the lead for good in a game that included 12 lead changes. The Scarlet Knights snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Huskies.
Rutgers, which beat a defending national champion for the first time in 12 tries, had lost two straight since its double-overtime triumph over then-No. 10 Florida on Dec. 29.
Shabazz Napier recorded 23 points to lead UConn (12-3, 2-2) and Andre Drummond added 10 points and 12 rebounds. UConn’s leading scorer Jeremy Lamb was held to a season-low eight points before fouling out with 2:43 left.
Huskies’ coach Jim Calhoun returned to the sidelines after serving a three-game suspension for NCAA recruiting violations.
UConn led by as many as six points in the opening 20 minutes, but settled for a 30-28 halftime lead. The Huskies shot 52 percent from the field in the first half, but turned the ball over 13 times. UConn finished with 20 turnovers.
