Washington 82, Texas-Arlington 72: Terrence Ross scored 23 points to lead the host Huskies past the Mavericks in the first round of the NIT.

C.J. Wilcox scored 15 points and Darnell Gant had 13 points and 10 rebounds to help top-seeded Washington (22-10) advance to face fourth-seeded Northwestern.

LaMarcus Reed scored 20 points and Bo Ingram added 17 for the eighth-seeded Mavericks (24-9).

Washington shot 57.4 percent from the field and finally pulled away over the final 10 minutes.

The Mavericks led 59-58 after Kevin Butler’s basket with 9:52, but Washington took control with a 19-6 run.

Ross hit the go-ahead basket and scored eight points during the surge. The Huskies' lead reached 12 on a 3-pointer by Gant with 2:56 remaining.

Washington led by as many as eight points in the first half but the Mavericks finished it with an 11-3 run to tie the score at 37.

Abdul Gaddy added 10 points for the Huskies, who are the first regular-season champion from a major conference to miss the NCAA tournament.

The 20-point outing was the sixth of the season for Ross … The Mavericks were just 5 of 21 from 3-point range … Washington guard Tony Wroten matched a season-high with eight assists … Texas-Arlington had 13 offensive rebounds in the first half and only four in the second half.
