California 78, CSU Bakersfield 65: The backcourt combo of Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs combined for 49 points as the host Golden Bears won their season opener.

Crabbe, a first-team All-Pac-12 selection last season who led the team in scoring, rebounding and 3-point field goals, finished with 27 points. Cobbs added 22 in the victory.

Stephon Carter, the leading scorer for CSU Bakersfield (0-2) the last two seasons, had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Barnes scored 12 points off the bench and starting forward Adam Young finished with eight points.

Crabbe scored 13 points in a 21-3 run that pushed California’s lead to 30-9 with 10 minutes left in the half.

California extended the lead to as many as 23 points with 9:30 remaining in the game before the Roadrunners made a late push to get within 13 with 1:55 left. Crabbe then made consecutive baskets to push the lead back to 17.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Bakersfield guard Zach Lamb is the brother of Jeremy Lamb, a rookie wing for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Lamb finished with four points. … CSU Bakersfield point guard Issiah Grayson, who finished 25th in the nation in assists per game last season (5.8), sat out for undisclosed reasons. … Roadrunners sophomore guard Javonte Maynor, who scored a team-high 14 points in the season opener, was held to six against California.
