No. 22 Michigan State 67, No. 7 Kansas 64:
Keith Appling scored five of his 19 points in the final 1:38 to help the Spartans bounce back from a season-opening loss and knock off the Jayhawks as part of the Champions Classic in Atlanta.

Freshman Gary Harris had 18 points and Branden Dawson added 12 points for Michigan State.

Elijah Johnson's 16 points led the Jayhawks (1-1), who went without a field goal for more than four minutes until Ben McLemore's bucket with 53 seconds left. McLemore finished with 14 points.

Appling made the two biggest shots of the game, first hitting a 3-pointer with 1:38 left to put the Spartans ahead 65-61. Kansas pulled within one on McLemore's three-point play, but Appling answered by knifing through the defense for a layup with 16 seconds remaining and just one tick left on the shot clock.

Michigan State shot 52.1 percent from the field, a significant improvement over the 37 percent shooting in the opening loss to Connecticut. The Spartans also outrebounded the Jayhawks by a 27-24 margin.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Kansas senior F Kevin Young made his 2012-13 debut. Young missed the opener after breaking two bones in his hand in late October. ... Jayhawks F Jamari Traylor totaled six points, four rebounds and three blocks - including a huge swat in transition to deny Harris a breakaway dunk. ... There were 16 total lead changes in the game.
