Nebraska 59, Jacksonville State 55: Brandon Ubel recorded 15 points and 10 rebounds and the Cornhuskers held off a furious late rally by the visiting Gamecocks.
Jacksonville State trimmed a 15-point deficit to 56-55 with 22.7 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Ronnie Boggs. After Nebraska’s Ray Gallegos made one free throw, Brian Williams missed a driving layup that could have tied it. Dylan Talley sealed it with a pair of free throws with six seconds left.
Freshman Shavon Shields scored a career-high 14 points, making six of his seven field-goal attempts for the Cornhuskers (7-3), who snapped Jacksonville State’s five-game win streak. Talley added 10 points.
Darion Rackley had 17 points to lead the Gamecocks (8-3), while Tarvin Gaines had 13, Boggs 11 and Williams 10.
The Gamecocks scored nine straight points to take a 20-13 lead with 9:38 left in the first half before the Cornhuskers took charge. Nebraska scored 16 of the final 18 points in the opening 20 minutes – seven by Ubel – to take a 29-22 lead at the break.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Nebraska was 0-for-5 from 3-point range, but made 17 of its 21 free-throw attempts. … Jacksonville State had just six assists on 17 field goals. … It was Nebraska’s only home game in a 23-day span.
