Josh Huestis had 18 points and 12 rebounds and the visiting Cardinal held on for the victory after leading by as many as 18 points in the first half.

After Jared Swopshire hit one of his two free throws to cut the lead to two with 44 seconds left, Northwestern forced a turnover before Tre Demps missed a layup with six seconds to play and Stanford grabbed the rebound to secure the win.

Robbie Lemons and John Gage had 12 points apiece for Stanford (8-4), which led 32-14 with 7:04 left in the first half before Northwestern (8-4) closed the half on a 17-3 run to cut the lead to four.

Reggie Hearn led the Wildcats’ comeback with 18 points and seven rebounds and Alex Olah added 16 points. Northwestern was outrebounded 34-26 in their second game without star forward Drew Crawford, who will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

Northwestern tied the game at 67 on Demps’ 3-pointer with 1:50 left before Aaron Bright answered with a 3-pointer to setup the dramatic final minute.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Stanford F Dwight Powell, who entered the game averaging a team-high 15.5 points, battled foul trouble and finished with eight points on 4-of-12 shooting. … Lemons was 4-of-8 from 3-point range in his first career start. … Demps had 12 points after leaving Tuesday’s game against Texas State with a sprained left ankle.
