No. 7 Michigan 71, Illinois 58: Sophomore guard Trey Burke had a game-high 26 points and eight assists to lead the host Wolverines past the Fighting Illini.
Burke, who became the 47th Wolverine to score 1,000 career points, was 8-for-11 shooting from the field, 8-for-10 from the foul line and committed one turnover as Michigan (23-4, 10-4 Big Ten) improved to 16-0 at home. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds and Glenn Robinson III chipped in 10 points to help the Wolverines win their second straight game.
Illinois (20-9, 7-8) had its five-game win streak snapped and fell to 5-4 on the road. Brandon Paul scored 10 points but was scoreless in the second half, and D.J. Richardson and Tracy Adams added 10 points apiece.
Illinois led 31-28 at halftime. Michigan went on a 15-3 run to start the second half, as Burke and Robinson III combined for 13 points, and the Wolverines pulled away.
The Wolverines have won the last five meetings against the Fighting Illini, including 74-60 on Jan. 27 in Champaign.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Michigan’s Burke is the seventh Michigan sophomore to score 1,000 career points. … Illinois’ Paul, who scored his 1,500th career point against Penn State, needs eight points to move into ninth place on the Fighting Illini’s career scoring list. … Illinois has played 11 RPI Top 25 opponents this season - the most in the nation - and is 5-6 against them.
