No. 9 Wisconsin 48, Virginia 38: Josh Gasser was the only player on the court to score in double figures, finishing with 11 points as the Badgers defeated the host Cavaliers in an extremely ugly ACC-Big Ten Challenge game.
Frank Kaminsky had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Badgers (9-0), who displayed their trademark defense in holding the Cavaliers (7-2) to 23.4 percent shooting, including 1-of-11 from beyond the arc. Joe Harris, Virginia's leading scorer on the season, went 1-of-10 from the field and finished with two points.
London Perrantes led the Cavaliers with just eight points, while Mike Tobey added seven for Virginia, which held Wisconsin to 28.8 percent shooting, including 5-of-23 from long range. Sam Dekker (1-of-8) and Traevon Jackson (3-of-13) were among the players who struggled offensively for the Badgers.
The first half featured a two-sided display of hideous offense, as Wisconsin shot 8-of-25, including 2-of-10 from 3-point range, while Virginia was 8-of-27 and 1-of-6 from behind the arc en route to a 25-20 halftime deficit. At one point in the opening 20 minutes, the Badgers went more than five minutes without a point, while the Cavaliers endured a nearly 10-minute stretch in which they did not have a field goal.
The second half was actually worse — especially for Virginia, which scored only one point in the first 8:42 of the half, while the Badgers scored nine points to open up a 34-21 lead. Gasser's 3-pointer with 6:24 left put Wisconsin ahead 42-30 and neither team made a basket the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Since scoring 43 points against North Dakota on Nov. 19, Kaminsky has scored a total of 66 in the last five games. ... No player in the game reached double figures in scoring until Gasser hit a pair of free throws with 58 seconds left. ... Tobey's layup with 9:04 to play was the last field goal for Virginia.
