Virginia Tech 61, Miami 60 (OT): Jarell Eddie scored 11 points in the final five minutes of regulation as the visiting Hokies rallied to an overtime win over the Hurricanes to open ACC play.
Eddie tallied a game-high 24 points and was 6-for-14 from 3-point range for Virginia Tech (7-3, 1-0), which trailed by as many as 13 in the second half. Ben Emelogu was the only other Hokie in double figures, adding 11 in his return from concussion symptoms.
Garrius Adams racked up 14 points for Miami (5-5, 0-1), which lost its third overtime game of the season. James Kelly chipped in 12 while Davon Reed added 10 for the Hurricanes.
Virginia Tech closed regulation on an 11-1 run — all from Eddie — and had an alley-oop just after the buzzer waved off that would have ended the game in regulation. Adams had two free throws that could have tied the game with seven seconds left in overtime, but came up short on the second to give the Hokies the win.
Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, but the Hurricanes held Virginia Tech to just three points over a 7:42 stretch and opened up a 31-23 halftime lead. Miami extended its lead to 40-27 less than five minutes into the second half on a 3-pointer from Reed.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Emelogu had missed Virginia Tech’s last three games. … The Hurricanes’ lone overtime win this year came against Georgia Southern. … Virginia Tech made 12 3-pointers in the contest.
