No. 5 San Diego State 73, Nevada 58: Xavier Thames scored 17 points and Winston Shepard added 16 as the Aztecs matched the best 22-game start in school history with an impressive win over the visiting Wolf Pack

Josh Davis added nine points and seven rebounds for San Diego State (21-1, 10-0 Mountain West), which has won 20 straight games since losing to Arizona on Nov. 14 to tie the school mark. Shepard made seven of his 10 shots from the field while JJ O’Brien and Dwayne Polee II added eight points apiece off the bench.

Jerry Evans Jr. led Nevada (12-12, 7-4) with 17 points while leading scorer Deonte Burton was held to 11 on 4-of-15 shooting. The Wolf Pack committed 12 turnovers and lost at San Diego for the fourth straight time.

San Diego State, which opened the 2010-11 season with a 21-1 mark, closed the first half with seven unanswered points and led 37-31 at the break. Polee scored with 11 minutes remaining to extend the lead to 55-41, and the Wolf Pack trailed by double digits for the rest of the contest.

The Aztecs shot 52.1 percent from the field but missed 10 of their 13 shots from beyond the arc. Thames, who extended his career-long double-figure scoring streak to 12 straight games, shot 4-of-7 from the field and 8-of-9 from the foul line while contributing five assists.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Polee had three steals for the Aztecs, who have won 111 straight games when leading with five minutes to play. … Nevada G Cole Huff, who scored 21 points in Wednesday’s loss at Utah State, scored 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting . … San Diego State’s 10-game conference winning streak is the longest in school history.
