No. 18 Michigan State 64, Navy 59: Travis Trice scored a career-high 25 points as the visiting Spartans survived a scare from the Midshipmen in the Quicken Loans Veterans Classic.

Branden Dawson added 12 points and eight rebounds for Michigan State (1-0), which finished with only two players in double figures. Denzel Valentine was limited to five points on 2-of-10 shooting, but dished out a team-high six assists for the Spartans.

Edward Alade led the way with 12 points for Navy (0-1), which lost the battle of the boards 38-30. Brandon Venturini chipped in with 11 points while Tilman Dunbar tallied 10 points and six assists for the Midshipmen.

Dawson hit five of his six shots in the first half to lead all scorers with 10 points as Michigan State took a 36-29 advantage into the break despite committing 10 turnovers. Trice knocked down two straight 3-pointers to give the Spartans their first double-digit lead before Navy responded with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 42-39.

Dawson muscled inside to put Michigan State in front 58-50, but the Midshipmen refused to back down and clawed within three with just under two minutes left in the game. Trice's driving layup gave the Spartans some breathing room at 62-57 and he made two clutch free throws in the final 17 seconds to preserve the win.
