Florida State 66, The Citadel 55: Freshman Xavier Rathan-Mayes hit five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 26 points as the host Seminoles snapped a three-game losing streak.

Rathan-Mayes, who scored 22 points in Sunday’s loss to Massachusetts, finished 8-for-9 from the field and 5-for-5 from 3-point range for Florida State (2-3). Montay Brandon added 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals, and the Seminoles shot 60.5 percent from the field as leading scorer Aaron Thomas did not play after missing the second half Sunday with dehydration.

Ashton Moore led The Citadel (2-3) with 17 points and Jake Wright hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points. Two Wright 3-pointers brought the Bulldogs within 56-51 with 2:37 to play, but the Bulldogs could get no closer.

The Bulldogs were within 31-30 on C.J. Bray’s layup a little more than five minutes into the second half, but Jarquez Smith’s layup on the ensuing possession started a 9-2 spurt that culminated with Rathan-Mayes’ 3-pointer with 12:44 to play, giving Florida State a 40-32 advantage. Florida State took control four minutes later, another Rathan-Mayes’ 3-pointer sparking seven straight points to put the Seminoles ahead 51-37 with seven minutes to play.

Moore’s jumper gave The Citadel a 6-2 lead with 16:52 left in the first half, but the Bulldogs would not score again for 10 minutes, 32 seconds as the Seminoles scored 15 points with Robbie Berwick’s two free throws making it 17-6. The Bulldogs' P.J. Horgan started a 13-5 half-closing run with a jumper and Wright’s 3-pointer with 48 seconds left cut Florida State’s advantage to 22-19 at intermission.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Rathan-Mayes, who scored five points total in his first two games, raised his scoring average to 12.5. … The Seminoles also played without Devon Bookert, who had a screw removed from his foot that was used to repair a fracture. … Florida State shot 14-of-21 from the free-throw line; The Citadel finished 4-of-6.
