North Carolina State 83, Tennessee 72: Ralston Turner knocked down eight 3-pointers en route to 33 points - both career highs - as the Wolfpack topped the visiting Volunteers.
Trevor Lacey contributed 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Anthony Barber chipped in seven points and a career high-tying eight assists for North Carolina State (9-2), which rebounded nicely from Sunday's home loss to Wofford. Turner was 8-of-17 from 3-point range while Lacey was 3-of-5 from outside the arc as the Wolfpack finished 11-of-26 from long range as a team.
Tennessee (4-4) also shot well from the arc, going 10-of-18 with four different players making multiple 3s. Josh Richardson missed his only 3-point attempt but scored a team-high 17 points for the Volunteers, while Armani Moore pitched in with 14 points, albeit on 6-of-17 shooting, and Kevin Punter also scored 14.
The highlight of the first half was Turner making a 3-pointer on three straight possessions as N.C. State turned a 14-10 deficit into a 19-16 advantage. Turner made another 3 less than two minutes later - his fifth of the night - and the Wolfpack overcame making one field goal in the final four minutes of the half to take a 39-27 lead into the break.
A 3-pointer by Turner and a jumper by Desmond Lee lifted N.C. State's advantage to 55-38 with 12 minutes left, but Tennessee responded with a 13-1 run to get within 56-51 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Detrick Mostella and Derek Reese with 8 1/2 minutes to go. The Wolfpack gradually built the lead back up, with Turner's final 3-pointer restoring a double-digit cushion with 5 1/2 minutes left
GAME NOTEBOOK: Turner's previous career high was 24 points, last done against Hofstra in mid-November. He is shooting 14-for-30 from 3-point range in his last three games. ... Mostella made three 3-pointers off the bench and scored nine points with four rebounds. Reese (six points) was the only other reserve who scored for Tennessee. ... Lacey, who shot 6-of-8 from the floor, has made at least 50 percent of his shots in six straight games.
