Arkansas-Pine Bluff 61, Houston 56 (OT): Marcel
Mosley poured in a career-high 33 points, including five 3-pointers, as the
visiting Golden Lions surprised the Cougars to open Las Vegas Classic
regional-round play.
Mosley finished 10-of-16 from the field and
8-of-10 from the free-throw line to outscore his teammates 33-28 for Arkansas
Pine-Bluff (2-8), which snapped a six-game losing streak. JoVaughn Love added
eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds, and Tevin Hammond chipped in seven
points, eight steals, six assists and five rebounds for the Golden Lions, who
won for the first time in seven road games this season.
Jherrod Stiggers had 16 points and LeRon Barnes
added 14 and 12 rebounds for Houston (5-2), which was playing on
back-to-back nights following a 10-day layoff. In scoring a season-low 56
points, the Cougars shot 34 percent from the field, including 9-of-33 from
3-point range, and lost a season-high 26 turnovers.
With the game tied at 45 following regulation, the
visitors scored the first eight points of overtime, but Houston closed to
within 56-53 on Cavon Baker’s 3-pointer with 41 seconds to
play. The teams traded free throws before Stiggers was stripped by Hammond,
and Mosley drained a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to play to put the Golden Lions up by five and seal the
win.
Houston jumped out to an 11-4 lead to open the
game, but Arkansas-Pine Bluff reeled off a 19-2 run over the ensuing eight
minutes to take a 23-13 advantage and led 27-16 at the half. Love’s
dunk with just under 15:30 to play gave the Golden Lions their largest lead at
37-21 and they led 44-32 with eight minutes remaining before the hosts
closed out regulation with a 13-1 run, pulling even on Barnes’ three-point play
with 36 seconds remaining.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Houston has had 41 turnovers to
only 22 assists over the last two games. … The Cougars entered the game
averaging 9.7 made 3-pointers a game and have hit at least eight in each of their
seven games. … Both teams close out Las Vegas Classic regional play Saturday
before tipping off bracket play Monday in Nevada.
