No. 20 Texas 77, No. 15 West Virginia 50: Cameron Ridley tallied 19 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals as the host Longhorns routed the Mountaineers to end a two-game slide.
Jonathan Holmes went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line en route to 16 points and 11 rebounds for Texas (13-4, 2-2 Big 12), which used a 31-of-37 performance at the stripe to post their fourth consecutive double-digit victory over West Virginia. Freshman Myles Turner added 16 points and seven boards as the Longhorns held the Mountaineers to a season-low 24.1 percent from the field.
Gary Browne shot 4-of-8 from the field and scored 14 points to pace West Virginia (15-3, 3-2), which has dropped two of three. Excluding Browne, the Mountaineers finished 9-of-46 from the floor.
West Virginia misfired on eight straight field-goal attempts over an eight-plus minute stretch early in the first half and Texas, which suffered its own cold spell during the same span, built an 11-point edge with a 12-0 surge. Despite its offensive woes, the Mountaineers remained within nine late in the opening stanza before Turner scored five straight to ignite a half-ending 7-2 spurt and send the Longhorns into the break with a 37-23 advantage.
Seven free throws in the first 3:07 of the second half helped West Virginia hang around, but the Mountaineers could not crack Texas’ double-digit lead even after Jevon Carter knocked down three 3-pointers over a 1:09 stretch. The Longhorns finally pulled away after Carter’s third triple with 12 1/2 minutes left, forcing the Mountaineers to miss their next 16 shots while Ridley put the finishing touches on a 16-4 run with a pair of dunks.
GAME NOTEBOOK: The teams combined for 50 fouls (West Virginia 30, Texas 20), which resulted in 66 free throws. … The Mountaineers forced 19 turnovers and have forced at least 18 in every game this season. …West Virginia G Juwan Staten, who entered Saturday as the conference’s fourth-leading scorer at 15.8 points, finished with three on 1-of-7 shooting, ending the Mountaineers’ late field-goal drought with his only bucket with just over a minute remaining.
