No. 12 Notre Dame 75, Miami (Fla) 70: Jerian Grant scored 23 points and the Fighting Irish shot lights out from behind the arc down the stretch to overtake the visiting Hurricanes in ACC play.
V.J. Beachem scored 13 points off the bench and Pat Connaughton added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Notre Dame (17-2, 5-1 ACC), which shot 7-of-12 from the arc in the last 15 1/2 minutes to continue its best start since the 1978-79 season. Grant shot 8-of-10 from the floor and added eight assists as the Irish won for the 13th time in 14 games.
Sheldon McClellan scored 17 points and freshman Ja'Quan Newton added a season-high 16 for Miami (12-5, 2-2), which couldn't hold a 12-point, second-half lead while dropping to 3-2 against ranked foes this season. Angel Rodriguez, who entered averaging 24.3 points, five assists and three steals against ranked teams, was limited to four points on 1-of-10 shooting.
The Fighting Irish started 2-of-16 from the arc before Beachem drained three of the Irish's seven 3-pointers over an eight-minute span that turned a 12-point deficit into a 61-58 lead with just over six minutes remaining. Grant, whose 3-pointer provided the three-point lead, added a three-point play to increase the lead to six and Miami didn't get closer than four the rest of the way.
McClellan scored seven points and Tonye Jekiri grabbed nine boards to offset 10 points by Grant as Miami led 30-29 during a slow-paced first half in which the teams combined to shoot 37.9 percent. McClellan and Davon Reed knocked down 3-pointers as the Hurricanes opened the second half on a 13-2 run for a 43-31 lead with 15 minutes to play.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Notre Dame F 6-10 junior Zach Auguste (14.3 points, 6.4 rebounds) returned after missing one game due to an academic issue and had four points and four rebounds in limited action. … Newton shot 6-of-9 from the field and added five assists. … Notre Dame turned the ball over on its first two possessions but finished with just eight.
