Minnesota built up a big lead early, then had to withstand a late charge by Louisiana-Monroe to post a 67-56 victory on Sunday in Minneapolis, Minn.
Minnesota forward Joey King led all scorers with 20 points, and went 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Guard Nate Mason added 12 points, while freshman guard Kevin Dorsey had 11 off the bench.
Forward Majok Deng led ULM (1-1) with 16 points. Forward Travis Munnings finished with 12, and forward Jamaal Samuel added 11.
The Golden Gophers (2-0) made four of their first six shots and went 3-for-3 at the line in building up the early 12-3 advantage.
Minnesota extended the lead to 38-25 at halftime, but had to survive a second-half surge that saw ULM take a 51-50 lead with 6:44 to play on a pair of Munnings free throws.
Coach Richard Pitino's squad responded, however, going on an 11-0 run over the next 4:44. King started the run with a pair of free throws, and Dorsey had five points over that span to help calm the home crowd.
After going 8-for-12 on 3-pointers in the second half of its victory over UMKC in the season opener, the Golden Gophers went just 3-for-22 from beyond the arc against the Warhawks.
