An astounding 26-2 run midway through the second half erased a 13-point deficit and enabled Tennessee to post an 84-74 nonconference win Thursday night over Marshall at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, Tenn.

Trailing 51-35 with 14:59 left after a jumper by Thundering Herd forward James Kelly, the Volunteers (2-1) stormed back, requiring just over five minutes to make the game-changing spurt. When guard Robert Hubbs canned two free throws with 9:38 remaining, Tennessee owned a 61-53 advantage.

Forward Armani Moore led four players in double figures for the Vols with 20 points, while Hubbs and point guard Kevin Punter added 19 apiece. Guard Devon Baulkman contributed 13 points.

After going to the foul line just twice in the first half, Tennessee marched there 28 times in the second half, converting 23. Foul trouble claimed Kelly, a Miami transfer who had 14 points and 12 rebounds before leaving with just under six minutes left.

Forward Ryan Taylor scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Marshall, the next-to-last Division I team to play its season opener. Guard Stevie Browning added 18 points, while guard Austin Loop and reserve guard Justin Edmonds each scored 11.

The Herd sank just 27-of-74 field-goal attempts, including a miserable 9-of-35 on 3-pointers.
