Guard Malique Trent scored 19 points and TCU was never seriously threatened in a 71-60 victory over Illinois State on Wednesday in the consolation game of the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.

Forward Vladimir Brodziansky had 16 points and nine rebounds and forward Karviar Shepherd scored 15 for the Horned Frogs (3-2). Trent, Brodziansky and Shepherd combined to make 21 of 33 shots from the field and their teammates were 6 of 20.

Guard Paris Lee scored 16 points and guard DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell added 14 for the Redbirds (2-4), who missed their first 14 3-point shots before finishing 3 of 17 from beyond the arc. Illinois State had five assists and 14 turnovers.

TCU took control early with an 11-0 run that created a nine-point lead. The Horned Frogs led by as many as 13 in the first half en route to a 32-23 advantage at the break.

Shepherd scored TCU's first seven points. His jumper to cap the spurt put the Horned Frogs ahead for good 3:10 into the game.

TCU led 45-31 after freshman forward JD Miller's three-point play with 12:30 remaining. Brodziansky's bucket with 6:41 to play gave the Horned Frogs their largest lead at 55-36.

Illinois State unleashed a 17-7 run, capped by a three-point play from Akoon-Purcell, to make it 62-53 with 3:02 left, but the Redbirds never pulled any closer.
