Florida State jumped out to a big first-half lead and cruised the rest of the way to knock off George Washington 67-48 at the BB&T Classic in Washington on Sunday.
Guards Xavier Rathan-Mayes and C.J. Walker led Florida State (7-1) with 11 points apiece.
Forward Kevin Marfo led George Washington (5-4) with 18 points.
The game was tied at 5-5 after a pair of free throws by George Washington center Collin Smith, but a 3-pointer by Rathan-Mayes sparked a 7-0 run that put the Seminoles ahead for good. Florida State led 35-19 at halftime.
George Washington would get no closer over the final 20 minutes. The Seminoles led by as many as 35 points in the second half. Florida State was up 67-35 on a dunk by guard Dwayne Bacon with 6:03 to play before the Colonials scored the final 13 points of the game against the Seminoles' bench.
Bacon was the only other Florida State player in double figures with 10 points. The big star for the Seminoles was the defense, which forced 18 George Washington turnovers and held the Colonials to 22.6 percent shooting from the field and 17.4 percent from 3-point range.
The Colonials' made 16 free throws for the game to finish as close as it was.
Marfo made 6 of 10 shots, but eight of his points came over the final six minutes. The rest of the squad went 8-for-52.
The only good news on the stat sheet for the Colonials came on the glass, where the missed shots led to a 52-42 rebounding edge.
