Washington State and Idaho met for the 111th year in a row. It is the sixth-longest continuous rivalry in the nation. The Cougars went into the contest with a 162-109 lead in the all-time series, but the Vandals had won the last two games.

The game began with Washington State coach Ernie Kent sitting beside Idaho coach Don Verlin on the Vandals' bench. At the 15th annual Coaches vs. Cancer Gala in September in Spokane, Wash., Kent bid on and won a "Coach for a Day" package donated by Idaho. Part of that package included the right to sit on the Idaho bench at the start of a game.

Shortly after tip-off, Kent made his way back to the Washington State bench, where he watched his team take an 11-4 lead on a layup by Iroegbu. The Cougars went up 21-5 on a 3-pointer by Malachi Flynn and led by as many as 17 in the first half.

The Cougars carried a 36-25 advantage into the break and went up by 15 early in the second half. The Vandals cut Washington State's lead to 48-36 with 14:28 to play, but then both teams went ice cold, going scoreless over the next 4:30. The Cougars maintained a comfortable lead as both teams struggled to score over the last 10 minutes.

Washington State shot 39.1 percent from the field and made 6 of 19 from 3-point range. Idaho shot 25.8 percent and made just 4 of 26 from long distance.
