WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- When a college basketball team's best player also is its hardest-working player, success usually follows.

That's the case this season for No. 15 Purdue, whose sophomore power forward Caleb Swanigan now has nine double-doubles through 12 games after contributing 21 points and 21 rebounds in only 28 minutes Monday night in an 82-50 victory over Western Illinois.

"There were (88 missed shots) in this game, so there were lots of rebounds to be had, but he certainly had a big night," Purdue coach Matt Painter said of Swanigan. "A lot of guys say they love basketball, but then they get to college with lots of demands on their time and that changes.

"But he truly loves the game and finds the time to work on his game every day."

The Boilermakers (10-2) also got 18 points from Isaac Haas and 16 from Vince Edwards in winning their fifth in a row. Swanigan was selected Big Ten Player of the Week earlier Monday after posting 26 points and 10 rebounds in an 86-81 victory on Saturday over Notre Dame.

"It's the mindset I have every game," Swanigan said of collecting a career-best 21 rebounds. "You have to go after it every time, and that's what I try to do every game.

"We just keep coming at people in waves with our size. We are used to it, because we practice against each other every day."

Swanigan, Haas and Edwards produced a collective 55 points, 33 rebounds and eight assists, combining to make 17 of 32 shots from the field and 18 of 20 free throws, including 12 of 13 from Haas.

"Those three played really well," Painter said. "Isaac made his free throws, and Vince has played so well in the past five games."

Indiana native Mike Miklusak led the Leathernecks (3-8) with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

Swanigan had 13 first-half points and 11 rebounds, Haas added 11 points on 11 of 12 from the free throw line, and Edwards had nine points and four rebounds as the Boilermakers took complete advantage of their superior size to lead 44-28 through 20 minutes.

"It's demoralizing for the other team when you have a player like Caleb out there doing what he does best," Haas said.

Purdue raced to a 13-3 lead, but thanks to Miklusak's 11 first-half points, Western Illinois closed within 27-22 with 6:16 left before intermission.

The Boilermakers responded with a 12-0 run, capped by a P.J.Thompson 3-pointer with 2:49 left, extending the advantage to 39-22.

Purdue was only 13 of 30 from the field in the first half but 15 of 18 from the line as four Leathernecks each picked up three fouls in the first 20 minutes.

Western Illinois was 10 of 30 from the field at halftime but 8 of 15 from beyond the arc.
