The Whiz Kids of Westwood did it again, turning in impressive performances to help No. 2 UCLA overcome an otherwise subpar performance in a 76-63 victory over Oregon State on Friday night at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.

Freshmen standouts Lonzo Ball and TJ Leaf made the big plays for the Bruins (14-1, 1-1 Pac-12), who suffered their first loss of the season 48 hours earlier against No. 21 Oregon.

Ball had a career-high 23 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Leaf recorded his sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots. The two young stars combined to make 16 of 27 field-goal attempts on a night when the rest of the team made 10 of 32.

Aaron Holiday added 14 points and six assists for UCLA. Bryce Alford had 12 points.

Leaf said the Bruins were disappointed with the loss to Oregon but pleased with the win over Oregon State.

"We definitely had to change a lot after that Oregon game," Leaf told the Pac-12 Network. "We played a horrific defensive game and rebounding game, so we definitely had to make a lot of changes, and we definitely did a lot better defensively and on the backboards. That's just something we need to continue to get better at."

Stephen Thompson Jr. scored a career-high 25 points for Oregon State (4-11, 0-2). Drew Eubanks posted 18 points and nine rebounds. Jaquori McLaughlin had 12 points.

UCLA trailed briefly on a couple of occasions over the first seven minutes. Oregon State held a 9-8 lead following a three-point play by Eubanks, but the Bruins responded with an 11-3 run to take a 19-12 lead on a dunk by Ball.

The Beavers cut the deficit to four on a 3-pointer by Gligorije Rakocevic, but the Bruins stretched the lead to eight on a jumper by Leaf, went up 32-21 on a dunk by Leaf and carried a 34-26 advantage into the break.

Thompson sank a jumper and a 3-pointer early in the second period to cut UCLA's lead to three. Moments later, Thompson hit another 3-pointer to tie the game. The Beavers trailed by two with 10 minutes remaining, but eventually the Bruins pulled away.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Ball and Holiday sparked a 10-0 run that put UCLA up 57-47. Ball made another 3-pointer later to give the Bruins a 14-point lead. They led by as many as 15 in the final minutes.

The Bruins shot 44.1 percent and made 9 of 25 from 3-point range. They were less efficient than usual at the free-throw line as well, making just 15 of 23.

Isaac Hamilton went 0 of 10 from the field, going scoreless for just the third time in his career. He went into the game averaging 15.7 points per game.

Oregon State shot 42.3 percent and made 7 of 14 from beyond the arc. Thompson made 10 of 17 and 3 of 4 from long distance.

Thompson said the Beavers were encouraged by their performance two days after suffering a 70-63 loss to No. 22 USC.

"Of course you hate to lose, but there are some positives we can take away from the game," he said. "More than anything, I think we just proved to ourselves and to others that we can play with any team in the country."
