CORAL GABLES, Fla. -- Notre Dame coach Mike Brey says his team's fans might need some heart medication after the the Irish came back in the final minute to post a 67-62 victory over Miami in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Thursday night.

It was the sixth consecutive win for his 20th-ranked Irish (15-2, 4-0 ACC), who moved into a tie for first place in the conference with Florida State.

Their combined winning margin in the four conference wins? Just 18 points, including a one-point victory in overtime at Pittsburgh.

"This is the fourth game where we looked dead in the water and we go right to the end," Brey said after the Irish recovered after losing an 11-point lead in the second half to outscore the Hurricanes (11-4, 1-2) 10-1 in the final three minutes.

The Irish trailed 61-57 with under three minutes remaining but scored six straight points to go up 63-61, taking the lead on forward V.J. Beachem's reverse layup with 1:04 left.

After Miami guard Ja'Quan Newton hit one of two free throws to get it down to one point, guard Steve Vasturia dropped in a layup in a drive across with lane with eight seconds left to put the Irish up by three at 65-62.

"Matt Farrell drove the lane and I thought I was going to get a look in the corner for 3, but I kind of bobbled it," Vasturia said. "I knew the shot clock was there, and I just kind of wanted to get in the lane. I kind of had a step on him and got a good look."

After a timeout with six seconds left, the Hurricanes frittered away a chance to tie by losing the ball.

"We talk all the time about little things, how important it is to do little things well," Miami coach Jim Larranaga said. "I thought the first half was a very well-played, hard-fought first half, ends up 28-all."

The turnover margin -- they had 13 to six for the Irish -- and a frustrating night at the free throw line where they were only 8 of 14 negated the Hurricanes' 47-38 rebounding advantage.

"We never hung our heads, we never got down on ourselves," said Miami senior guard Davon Reed, who matched his career high with 21 points. "We definitely put ourselves in position to fight back and to win the game. Just a lack of execution down the stretch and a lack of poise a little bit.

Guard Matt Farrell, whose two free throws with three seconds remaining accounted for the final score, led the Irish with 15 points. Beachem added 13 and Vasturia scored 10.

Newton with 14 points also was in double figures for Miami.

The Irish, who trailed most of the first half, scored the first 10 points of the second half to assume a 38-28 less than three minutes in and had a 50-39 cushion with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

"I felt really good," Brey said. "We were moving. And they really started driving us. They're really physical drivers. And we had a hard time keeping them in front of us."

The Hurricanes began chipping away at that margin and caught up at 52-52 on guard Anthony Lawrence's corner 3-pointer with 7:04 left. But they couldn't finish the deal.

"We turned the ball over at critical times," Larranaga said.

NOTES: Miami announced before that game that junior F Michael Gilmore, who was sitting out this season after transferring from VCU, was dismissed from the team. ... Notre Dame's 28 points were the Irish's fewest in the first half of a game this season. The team's season low for a half is 25 in the second half of a 74-66 loss to Villanova on Dec. 10. ... The loss ended Miami's home-court winning streak at 21 games. ... Both teams are on the road Saturday for their next game with Notre Dame at Virginia Tech and Miami at Pittsburgh.
