Senior Dylan Osetkowski poured in a career-high 26 points to lead second-seeded Texas to a wild 79-73 win over seventh-seeded South Dakota State in NIT first-round play on Tuesday in Austin, Texas.
Texas scored the game's first 19 points, led by eight at the half and by 10 points 4 1/2 minutes into the second half before the Jackrabbits forged a huge rally. After momentarily giving up their lead, the Longhorns fought back and were up 74-71 following a Matt Coleman III jumper with 1:43 to play.
South Dakota State's Mike Daum answered with a jumper before Osetkowski hit a free throw. After a miss by the Jackrabbits, Coleman added a pair from the charity stripe with 41 seconds to play, then added another free throw nine seconds later to allow the Longhorns to hold on.
Texas (17-16) next will play the winner of Wednesday's first-round game between third-seeded Xavier and sixth-seeded Toledo.
Courtney Ramey tallied 13 points for the Longhorns while Kerwin Roach II finished with 12.
South Dakota State, the Summit League regular-season champion, ended its season at 24-9.
Daum scored 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Jackrabbits. He finished his college career seventh in Division I history with 3,067 career points, passing Harry Kelly (Texas Southern, 1979-83) and Keydren Clark (Saint Peter's, 2002-06) on Tuesday.
David Jenkins added 19 points for South Dakota State, with Skyler Flatten hitting for 14 points in the loss.
Texas built its 19-point lead over the initial 4:11. The Jackrabbits slowly clawed their way back into contest, pulling within 31-28 after a free throw by Tevin King with 5:09 to play in the half.
The Longhorns settled for a 43-35 advantage at intermission.
Texas led 57-47 after a 3-pointer by Elijah Mitrou-Long with 15:37 to play, but the Jackrabbits reeled off 18 of the game's ensuing 25 points, capped by a jumper by Jenkins, to take a short-lived 65-64 advantage with 8:34 remaining.
Daum's dunk made it a three-point South Dakota State edge, but Ramey sank a tying 3-pointer, and then an Osetkoski free throw put the Longhorns back in front 68-67 with 7:28 to go.
