Behind hot shooting, No. 2 Virginia cruised past Georgia Tech 81-51 on Wednesday night in Charlottesville, Va., for a fifth consecutive win.
The Cavaliers shot 55.6 percent from the floor against the nation's 13th-ranked defensive shooting percentage team and connected on nine of their 17 3-point attempts.
Ty Jerome led the way for the Cavaliers with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting while sophomore De'Andre Hunter added 18 points.
Virginia (25-2, 13-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) continued to add to their 19-point halftime lead early in the second half before Georgia Tech (12-17, 4-12) hit a couple of outside shots to cut the margin to 21. That would be as close as the Yellow Jackets would get.
Jose Alvarado led three Georgia Tech players in double figures with 12 points. James Banks added 11 and Michael Devoe put in 10.
The Yellow Jackets were held to 37.5 percent shooting and 5 of 17 from deep. They have failed to score more than 54 points against Virginia in the past five meetings.
Georgia Tech made five of its first seven field-goal attempts to grab an early four-point lead.
Virginia used an 11-0 run sparked by Hunter and Guy to seize control, and the Cavaliers led 41-22 at the half after shooting 53.3 percent from the field. Hunter put in 14 first-half points.
The Yellow Jackets cooled down after a hot start and made just four of their final 22 shots of the half, scoring 11 points in the final 15 minutes. Banks led the way with nine first-half points.
The Cavaliers owned a 41-21 rebounding advantage for the game while outscoring the Yellow Jackets 42-26 in the paint. The teams combined for just 15 turnovers.
Virginia will stay at home to face Pittsburgh on Saturday while Georgia Tech will welcome Boston College on Sunday.
